You’re spot-on with much of this. I scored my first book deal at 29 (I’m now 31 and it has yet to be published – thanks, Covid!), and thematically there is a bit of overlap between our works. Nailing the pitch is hard, and it’s something that you’ll refine over time. Aside from that, though, you’re very right in that there are enormous barriers to publishing for those who defy genre conventions, and the expectations placed on disabled people who are writing about disability are intrinsically ableist. I’ve found it difficult at times to navigate maintaining my integrity and also needing to engage with marketing, which may dilute the message of one’s text. I was very fortunate to have found an indy feminist press that’s given me a ton of creative ownership, but my experience is rare. Solidarity.
