This paragraph is so powerful. Identity is a tricky thing. As a sometimes homeless drug user and Mad person, those are absolutely the most salient aspects of my personhood. *And* even as I’ve been stigmatized, experienced social and familial exclusion, and been discriminated against within the medical system, my Whiteness has protected me. It’s unequivocally the reason I’m alive today. When it comes to mainstream (read: White) feminism, I feel mostly hostility and disdain. I also know that as someone who benefits from Whiteness and is currently housed/abstinent from substance use, I could easily be included if I wanted to be. Thanks for writing this, for lack of anything more insightful to say. It’s a message that bears repeating (though I’m not sure how many are truly willing to listen).
