These are false equivalencies. Addiction as a chronic, relapsing disease is the dominant framework, but it is far from the only one. Critical drug studies, as well as medical sociology, neuroscience, critical science, and feminist studies all offer alternate paradigms that are arguably more valid. For something accessible, check out Dr. Carl Hart, who is a professor of neuroscience at Columbia University and a drug user. The rich scholarship in these fields is a far cry from the “alternate facts” espoused by conspiracy theorists whose information is derived from YouTube.
