Thanks for such a thoughtful comment. I struggle with my position on meds and the psych system more generally. I genuinely don’t know who I’d be without the former (I’ve been medicated, self medicating, or some combination thereof for almost all my life), and I don’t harbour delusions that I’d somehow be “better” or more “pure,” but I certainly wonder about the extent to which my Madness *could* be accepted were in not for capitalism. As you’ve said, we are embedded in these systems without consent, and so while I simultaneously want to eradicate them all, I don’t think my voice and the voices of my peers are yet loud enough to do so. It then becomes a question of doing what I know is “right” and being heavily penalized (ie not taking meds and being involuntarily committed), or ceding to social norms to retain (the illusion of?) autonomy. Tricky, whatever the case.
