Thank you for such a kind and insightful comment. I didn’t mention migraines, but I get them on occasion (ditto auras and synesthetic phenomena). I appreciate that you’ve used your experience within the nursing profession to illuminate its limitations. I was raised by a nurse and sense the profession attracts people who think in algorithms and then rewards them for doing so. With my extensive forced psychiatric history, psych nurses in particular scare the heck out of me. It’s interesting that you mention ahuyuasca – I’ve never done it (and would be excluded based on my diagnoses even if I wanted to), but I’ve been in extreme altered states that replicate what I’ve heard about it. My forthcoming book explores this through paradigms that disrupt biomedical understandings of illness. Finding alternate, non-pathologizing frameworks through which to view my lived experience has saved my life; solidarity.
