Linguistic gatekeeping is rife in academic spaces, and it tends to manifest amongst those who are both pompous and insecure. Grammar isn’t real (by which I mean, it is ever-evolving and inherently arbitrary), trends change, etc. Anyone who won’t see past the fact that someone ESL probably doesn’t have much of value to contribute themselves (and knows it).
