I’m not quite sure how you made this leap. Doing so is logically inconsistent with much of your article, and completely undermines disability culture. You’re perpetuating ableist assumptions that all disabled people are victims, and by negating our choice to self-define, you’re speaking about, not with us. It’s possible to have multiple, intersecting identities at once. I am disabled, neurodivergent, Mad, and a psychiatric survivor, but I do not see myself as mentally ill. My peers have rich, varied deviations from what is upheld as “normal,” and until we banish “normal” (which we never will, because it is a site of power and social control), I am empowered by acknowledging exclusion on the bases of my difference. Perhaps actually consult with disabled people before telling us what to do next time?
