I have no pity for women who have chosen to leverage White, patriarchal standards of beauty to their advantage. Sure, influencer culture is a produce of these structures, but no one is forcing women to monetize their ability to conform to the male gaze. Their success is tenuous because it’s built on oppression, and as many of them uncritically promote the very structures that garnered them tepid fame, they throw other people (including racialized men, btw), under the bus. Their subscribers are no different, and by framing them as victims you’re contributing to the problem. Do something actually radical without expectation of monetary gain and see what happens. It may not be sexy, but at least it’s not regressive.
