I am as well, to an extent. That said, I am also in the camp of, “certain subsets of the population have been left for dead (ie unhoused drug users, of whom I was one), and this is by design. The fact that harm reduction initiatives have been co-opted by the state, and that they and the non-profit industrial complex keep people alive -barely, isn’t enough.” The only way for “addicts” (which is a relatively new term) to gain full access to citizenship and *thrive* is to change policy, which begins with dismantling the medical model of addiction. In other words, recovery isn’t my goal, and it’s not a useful conceptual tool in politics.
