Here's the thing about the SFE: Irrespective of Zimbardo's motivations, his sample was too homogenous. It has long been interpreted as a template for "understanding human nature," with little - no critical discussion about which "humans" actually count. Do mostly straight, white, college-educated men want power, and will this power corrupt? Absolutely, because they've been socialized to expect as much. Had this experiment been done with a group of say, Black, queer women, or sex workers, or illicit drug users, or trans youth, all of whom need collectivism to survive oppressive policies, the results would have been wildly different. Since its inception, White maleness has been conflated with "humanness," and the SFE is no different.
