Excellent piece. I have no faith in hospitals when it comes to equitable care for marginalized folks. As a sometimes homeless, Mad drug user, the violence and trauma I’ve experienced from the medical system is indescribable. Much like you, I thought that getting a PhD in medical sociology would empower me to advocate for change. After getting kicked out of my program for being disabled, I understand that each of these systems is rooted in the same structural oppression and mutually reinforce each other. I too envision a world without hospitals (or cops, or social workers). Sending you warmth.
